Looking up at the sky
Looking out at a life that is passing us by
We could break for the gate and climb over the fences before it's too late
Go as fast and as far as we can
We could make for the trees and keep going and going until we are free from the fits and the screams
And the monsters and voices and sleepless dreams
Would they keep to themselves if we ran?
We'll change our faces and our names but the story will still be the same:
You and me and the ones who'd have us both in chains
But they're gone
Gone gone gone
You were cool when we met but you hadn't had time to get used to me yet
We were young and naive
And despite what you say I still have to believe that you wanted what I wanted too
Every kiss
Every touch
Every cry to the heavens was almost too much
We were fools
But we knew that we'd have to get up and get out of here soon or we'd be here until we were through
But then we took it all too far
We threw our wishes at the stars
It doesn't matter who you are or who you want to be
It's gone gone gone
Now it's dark
Almost black
We can head to the ocean and never look back
I'll find work where I can
You'll be my woman
I'll be your man and the father that I never had
But you stop and you say that I have to go but you have to stay
You say go and be free
That you'll stay where you are and be finished with me and that staying here isn't so bad
I turn my back and slip away
And every single night I'll pray
And take it day by terrifying day
Now you're gone gone gone
I'm Brian Shaddock. I write songs. It's alarming how few of them are actually about anything, but I still like most of them. Some I like less than others, but I've included them, too. Rage (in progress, last revised August 18, 2013)
Good God Almighty
Thanks for all you had to give
But if you really loved me you'd have never let me live
This useless body
These unfamiliar eyes
Theses senses made for nothing more than processing the lies
The baby boy you didn't have the heart to kill
The faithful vessel you can punish as you will
The fingers grasping for a hand that isn't there
A creature begging to a man that doesn't care at all
The Universe is beautiful
I should be delighted
But fuck the universe and everything inside it
Every single sermon brings me closer to the past
But every single footstep takes me closer to the last
I walk beneath the sunlight like I'm never going to die
Receiving signals from an old man in the sky
Searching for the Answer
Something simple but profound
Shake the pillars hard enough to bring the temple down
Good God Almighty
Do I really have to fight when it would be so easy just to go into the light?
And let it burn
And let it burn until I'm done for good
I swear to God Almighty I did everything I could
I never reached the summit even though I kept on climbing
But it will all be over soon
(So there's your silver lining)
Life's a game I had to play
I knew I'd never win it
So fuck the universe and everybody in it
Thanks for all you had to give
But if you really loved me you'd have never let me live
This useless body
These unfamiliar eyes
Theses senses made for nothing more than processing the lies
The baby boy you didn't have the heart to kill
